In 2024, the District led the nation in LEED-certified green building construction per capita, achieving 33.4 square feet per person, significantly surpassing Massachusetts. Despite its smaller population, D.C. ranked fifth in total square footage with nearly 23 million square feet from 111 projects. Maryland and Virginia also made notable contributions, with Maryland climbing to fifth place in per capita rankings. The top states for gross square footage included California, Texas, New York, and Illinois.
